Course Description
This rigorous class will give students the fundamental concepts, vocabulary, and skills used to design for the stage such as: color, line, composition, research and script analysis. The class has a written component and is intended to prepare students to design Showcase productions in the Studio Theatre. Students are also expected to complete a minimum of ten hours of production work for Theatre Department productions.
Class Structure
This class meets twice per week and is a studio course with in-class projects as well as homework. There is no text, but there are art materials that you must buy. Attendance is mandatory and necessary.
It is essential that you have the correct, necessary materials with you for each class. It is your responsibility to check the materials list in the syllabus to be sure that you have them.
The syllabus is broken into units, such as color, composition, etc. The homework for each unit must be completed in order to fully apprehend the content of each unit. The coursework is cumulative, so it is important that any missed work be completed as soon as possible.
It is not necessary that you have artistic skill in order to succeed in this class, but it is necessary that you apply yourself to the best of your ability.
You will be required to see one major professional theatre production and one Theatre Department production and write a 2-3 page response paper for each following the guidelines on the assignment sheet. DO NOT leave this to the last minute!
It is necessary that you clean up your work table and dispose of all trash before leaving the classroom.
